Spooktober: week 2 update

I’m back with another Spooktober update!

In the past week, since update number 1, I have made progress on Bloomtown: A Different Story: I’ve got about 13 hours in the game. And I also started Slay the Princess, playing it for 2 hours.

My initial impression of Bloomtown didn’t change much. I have this feeling that Bloomtown has the bones of a great game… but it just falls short. My main criticism is that the game is trying to do so much while at the same time really stretching the main quests to the point where the main storyline gets dissolved. I want to care for my mission, but I’m just getting lost in the plot honestly.

The combat can be fun, but also a bit frustrating once you realize you can’t use magic on bosses because they’re resistant to everything. I always prefer spells rather than melee or ranged combat, even more so when I play turn-based games, so it was a frustrating moment when I realized I’d have to invest in good weapons because of the bosses.

Anyway, sorry if I sound a bit too negative in this review of the game. It’s like a C tier for me, so not great but not terrible. What I will say is that the game doesn’t play like horror at all, so if you’re afraid of the genre but still want to experience some slightly disturbing elements, this could be a good option. I’m calling it horror for babies.

Slay the Princess, on the other hand…

It definitely hits the right level of psychological horror in my opinion. It has some gore elements, so be mindful of that. I really enjoy visual novels but it can be frustrating when the game gives you a fake illusion that your choices matter when they don’t. But in Slay the Princess, it really revolves around choices (and also lack of choice).

I should be done in one more sitting. It’s hard to talk about it without giving it away too much, but I’m enjoying how weird it’s getting and I can’t wait to see what happens.

I’m planning to wrap up my Spooktober by the end of next week because I have some family visiting soon and I won’t have a lot of time to play games then. So I’ll be focused on wrapping up Bloomtown and Slay the Princess and playing through This Bed We Made.

How’s your October going so far?
