Game Pass is losing what made it special (and this makes me sad)

This post is a vent on the Game Pass price hike and a write-up of my personal history with the service. I won’t be talking in depth about the difference between the tiers or analysing value for money.

Last week, Microsoft announced a 50% increase in the price of Game Pass subscriptions. The Ultimate tier price will go up from €18 to €26,99 per month in my local currency. They also introduced changes in their tiers – now, there are the Essential, Premium and Ultimate tiers, with some variation in how many titles are available in each one and some other features.

My first console as an adult was an Xbox I bought back in 2022. When I decided to take on gaming as a hobby, I wasn’t sure what console to get. My personal computer is a MacBook and getting a PC was too big of an investment. The Xbox seemed like a great option because of Game Pass, and the Series S was an easy pick since it was more affordable than the Series X and I didn’t own any physical media. (For those who are unfamiliar with Xbox, the Series S is an all-digital console, unlike the Series X)

So happy when I unboxed my Xbox. 💚

I got the promotional Game Pass period (first month for €1) and started exploring the library.

And I tried out so many games that first year. Through Game Pass I played some video games that I absolutely love, like Unpacking, Stardew Valley, Overcooked 2, Lake, Coffee Talk 1 & 2, Vampire Survivors, Omori, Life is Strange: True colors, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, and the list goes on. But equally important, I played many games I did not like. The service let me explore different genres and styles when I didn’t have a clue about what I liked just yet.

Believe it or not, I didn’t even know what a gaming backlog was. Game Pass and my “play later” list was pretty much my backlog, up until I decided to purchase a few titles outside of its catalog.

Microsoft kept changing the service every year. In 2023, they created the Core tier to replace what was called Xbox Live Gold, and I saw the first price increase since I got my Xbox; Ultimate became €12,99. In 2024, a new Standard tier was created to replace what was called “Game Pass for console”. There was another price increase then, but Ultimate was still “just” €14,99. Even as a primarily indie gamer, it was still worth it for me when I put down on paper how many games I was playing versus how much it would’ve cost to purchase them. But the community knew this probably wasn’t going to be the end of the price increases, when considering Microsoft’s recent purchase of Activision Blizzard that was completed in the end of 2023.

At some point in 2024, I stopped my subscription. In late 2024 I got my Steam Deck and started building my Steam library, and nowadays I play mostly on the Deck even though I also have a library of games on my Xbox.

I have no idea how many people experienced a similar gaming journey to me, but it just pains me that future gamers won’t be able to use Game Pass as a discovery tool because it’s simply so damn pricey now.

Gaming as a whole is becoming more and more expensive and Game Pass felt like an accessible way for people who wouldn’t be able to afford gaming otherwise, or that would need to save for months to be able to play a new release. A 50% price hike just leaves me at a loss for words to describe the level of disrespect for the consumer and it’s no surprise that after the increase announcement, the Game Pass cancellation page crashed due to too much traffic.

I wish I could finish this post on a good note, but it seems that once a service reaches a certain level of adoption, “enshittification” is unavoidable. The same service that made gaming accessible to many is pricing out the people who needed it most and leaving new gamers with the old anxiety of buying blind. I’m sure that Game Pass will remain as a good option for some, but what made it groundbreaking and special in my opinion is gone with this insanely disrespectful price hike.

I had a similar experience jumping from Xbox to PC around 2021(ish?).

Early gamepass was really affordable. Even as someone who tends to avoid paying for stuff monthly I got plenty of value from it, so it sucks to see it become so pricey (and confusing too, why change the tiers that were already pretty convoluted to begin with?).

I still paid for it on PC but ended up cancelling it after the price changes were announced haha

    1. The tier stuff has always been SO confusing to me, and it doesn’t help that they change it every year.

I’m sorry you ended up cancelling it, but due to the crazy price increase I would’ve done the same to be honest. Currently I am on a 3-month subscription I got from cdkeys but won’t be renewing it after it runs out.

  2. One of the coolest parts about Game Pass (back in the good ol’ days) to me is how it helped me discover games that I otherwise wouldn’t have spent money on and would’ve gone my whole life without playing. It doesn’t seem like Xbox gives a damn about that anymore either, since they really only tend to slap the big hitters onto Game Pass and leave the others in the dust.

    1. 100% agree with you. I feel the Xbox/Game Pass pages have such a good recommendation logic that I also found many games that way. In comparison, I feel that the Steam shop ends up prioritizing some titles (probably ads or just by overall popularity) that are irrelevant to me.
It’s a shame that they are prioritizing the big titles. I’m sure there’s a big audience for that but I feel excluded.

    2. Yeah I also feel what I got out of gamepass the most was smaller titles that I wouldn’t have dared to try thinking I might only play it for 30 minutes and then drop it. For big titles where I know I’m putting in many hours I don’t need a gamepass for simple access. I wish they would have something like an Indie gamepass that only has smaller games and is way cheaper, I don’t care about the triple A releases, I will get the ones I want from that myself anyway.

      1. I would love an indie Game Pass!

  3. Great article! I’ve been a bit out of the loop on everything going on with the recent changes with Game Pass, so thanks for giving your perspective!

I haven’t had an Xbox since the 360, but I had done the same when Sony raised their prices and implemented tier changes for PlayStation Plus (PS+) a few years back (I think it was in 2023 too)

After they did this, I haven’t been back unless if I was gifted a subscription! They even used to have good sales on where you could get a year of PS+ for only like $45 or so per year, and because it used to just be on tier, it would include a good amount of “free” games per month across the PS3, PS Vita, and PS4 (and later on the PS5). But, once they raised the prices to $80 per year for the base tier, I knew that I wasn’t going to pay that haha! Especially since I’m primarily a single-player gamer!

And at the end of the day too, I like being able to own the games I buy in some form or fashion, so having a “Netflix-style” of gaming never appealed to me too much haha!

Thanks again for sharing! Great write-up

    1. It’s a bit crazy how these platforms can get away with increasing the price so much, after getting everyone in the service! I don’t know much about PS Plus so thank you for sharing that perspective.
      Thank you for reading!
